MASS EFFECT 2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

So, ME2 is out and no doubt you've played it. I know I have. What are everyone's thoughts so far? Mine, in bullet-form:

-Damn, it's like, barely an RPG anymore. No XP for kills, a much smaller skill tree, no looting. What is this, Gears of Mass Effect?

-Shooting is way better, localized damage makes aiming actually worthwhile.

-Graphics have taken a serious step up.

-The character importing from ME 1 was AWESOME

-No Mako? That honestly makes me a little sad

Overall, I think it's great. They removed way more of the RPG stuff than I thought they would, and I'm still getting used to that, but I'm liking what I'm seeing.

1-10 scale

Story - 7
RPG Elements - 4
Combat - 9
Gear (Weps/Armor) - 2 (2 SMGS/2 Pistols WTF?) AND NO HELM TOGGLE!!!!!!!!
Graphics - 8

It's a solid game, and I like it MUCH better than the first, but if you're looking for a RPG rather than a "Gears of Mass Effect" look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a good action game with RPG elements you're in the right place.

I agree. Especially with the limited pistols/smgs/etc. Definitely streamlined the game from the first. Also didn't realize that the "revamped inventory system" really meant "no inventory system". But I don't miss it TOO much (only the upgrades).

Aside: NO HELM TOGGLE!!!! WTF? Seriously. I got so annoyed that I switched to a different helmet (the visor) just so I didn't have to hear a translated voice. Also, how in the fuck does Miranda's breather thing protect the rest of her face/head from the vacuum of space? Oh well it's a game. But they really should add it back in for when you're in non-combat areas (i.e. citadel) and if you get caught without it on... no armor bonus. Seems fair?

Oh another annoyance: Can't go onto the Normandy without leaving the citadel (to talk to people, read messages, etc). WTF man. I'd like to stay docked.
The Purgatory mission to get Jack was f-in' SWEET though. That's about as good an experience as Bioware has ever given me.
Re: MASS EFFECT 2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Hmm i share some of the same qualms with you guys. But in the end I think the overall experience was amazing. It is still an RPG/Shooter. I think the gears statement is somewhat true, but a lil melodramatic.

-Miss the mako space exploration, but I also dont miss having to needlessly drive around rocks/etc... so this is kind of a + / -

-I am a loot whore... it is why games like diablo pump me up. I miss looting/a traditional RPG inventory system. However I found in ME1 my inventory was annoying to manage. They fixed this, but it also seems slightly limited. I miss having different armors for my teammates etc. Not exciting just changing from white to black. However, it is less burdensome managing, and I hated maxing inventory in the first one... was a nightmare... so once again ( + / - )

-the helmet toggle should be included... no reason for it not to be ( - )

-Class differences are nice

-I love the skill trees now, and how they spread for each of your squad members, smaller but more refined, and the 4th level split really can change how you play a group and compliment your intended squad. LAST STAGE heavy warp is awesome against harbringer.

-the final boss is so dope looking and the story is fricking awesome

-importing your character and story from me1 makes the game feel 100x more personal.... I havent enjoyed an rpg like this since the PSX and SNES days

anyways, losing my train of thought, in the end, this is a damn good game. I enjoyed vanguard, even though tons of people are bitching about it. Unfortunately I picked the claymore shotgun when I got my chance to pick a new weapon/training... shame on me... dont make this mistake

And yes miranda's breather mask... I think her eyes might have blown out of her face, but she is a biotic who knows what she can do.
I just beat the game tonight, banged tali and miranda. Samara is my next conquest. Thinking I will play the game through again as a sentinel. BTW anyone find that even though they try to be a badass they end up being a good guy. THis next time through I am going pure paragon. I came very close to maxing out my renengade, sadly i wanted to keep legion and save a few others... how the games ends...
lol I wonder what decisions you all make...

Highly recommend this for anyone that has the time (20-30 hours gameplay) and wants to enjoy a superb RPG

After 18 hours of play, I have decided that Mass Effect 2 is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Literally. Automobiles and the internet blow compared to this. Everyone leave me alone until I've played every square inch of it.

hahah awesome mark!

Also, I saved and shutdown before startting a new game so I went at it again with the right team, got evereyone out safely except for lillith the colonist. She got liquified.

Found out a lot more about this game, and started up a sentinel for my second playthorugh. It is boring, I truly appreciate the vanguard class. It is my playstyle to a T.

Anyways, ME2 is amazing. Inspired me to give Dragon Age Origins a try.... now that is a tough/indepth RPG... I do not recommend this for anyone who is casual.

Re: MASS EFFECT 2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

SO here I am last night, just pulled a fast one and got all the Dr.pepper items for free and blood dragon armor as well.

When I loaded the game up and went to get water I sat amazed listening to the sound/music in the game. I am on my second time through (no rush, I 100% the game first time through) and the sound, just the background noise/music is fricking amazing. It felt like an action movie/thriller of like 4 star quality.

I can't help but re-state that this is one of the most fun/enjoyable games I have ever played. I would love to replay it again, but sentinel is a little boring in the beginning. Need to get to the collector's ship and get me a rifle.

That game freakin' worked me over with its greatness. As usual, Bioware got me all caught up in the story, and now I'm feeling all emotional like a big sissy.

I'm going through again. And I agree, I'm scoring Dragon Age as well. What a freaking awesome game.

Re: MASS EFFECT 2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Yea it has received mixed reviews, both good/bad, but after playing through I can honestly say that the full package is great/historic. I do not need & I do not think this game needs all the traditional RPG elements to make it great. I applaud Bioware, and think if you cannot see the beauty and polish in this game than you do not know what a quality game truly is.

Dragon Age was fun for having those RPG features, but also it was kind of a pain to deal with a lot of those elements. I dig changing armor/making my character look badass (I AM A LOOT WHORE), but I found in Dragon Age you can aquire some pretty amazing armor early on, which last the full game, so my characters really didnt change appearance that much anyways.

If that is the case, than I do not mind a streamlined inventory/gameplay. It provides for a much smoother play through. Plus ME2 did allow for eploration outside of gameplay at nearly any time, so it was not as rigid as say a FFX where you just progressed and did not outside exploration from the main storyline.

I think FF8 was one of the only FF games to have "exploration" really. With the ragnarok you could go anywhere the map would let you... but I still felt like I was stumbling along in that game... I am shocked I ever beat it.

Re: MASS EFFECT 2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Heh "pulling a fast one". Right. I just got all the Dr. Pepper items free as well.

Steps to do it:

1. Make sure your EA Account and Bioware account are linked.
2. Go to www.drpepper.com and make an account using fake info and an @mailinator.com address. Example: Badass Mofo, 999 Badass St., Arlington, Virginia 22222 - badassmofo1@mailinator.com
3. Enter in one of the following codes, along with "No Purchase" in all three fields (N, tab N, tab N):
CBEEAAA41NWH
CBEEAAAE4L9N
CBEEAAAFQG9J
CBEEAAAE98ZV
4. Click the link to redeem the code on EA's site and enter in your REAL EA account info.
5. Pick your item, click the link to redeem, and you will see it in your account.
6. Repeat steps 2-5. for the other items. You will have to log out of Dr. Pepper's website each time to make a new account.
Enjoy...

Almost all the FFs up to 10 had open exploration, just certain towns would not allow you in unless you completed the quests ahead of it.

7 stands out in my head mostly.

too true, there usually was no reason to go backward though because the shops didn't scale and outside the quest that brought you there the npc's were stale

i just loved trying to jump ahead, and buy a poweful item or find something you were not supposed to see. battle an enemy that gives you crazy XP but almost wipes you out.

Exploration is the name of the game. Games where you can experience that rock.
